The Way
Thursday, March 20, 2014
Thursday of the Second Week of Lent
Psalm 1:6
The way of the wicked vanishes.
Wicked: evil, iniquitous, dreadful, mean, wicca, wizard, witch. Who is wicked, what is truth? Where have all the flowers gone?
What way is that which vanishes? The wicked way, the evil way, the dreadful way, the way not of meaning but of meanness. This way dries up, disappears, comes to the cliff and leads over.
How deceptive the forest is. The paths lead this way and that into green pastures, flowered fields, quiet glades of sunshine and singing birds. How can one be wicked and one be not? Isn’t it me and not the path that makes it wicked?
When I live wrong my path is wrong. No matter where it seems to go, finally it vanishes. Finally it is false. It is far better to be blind and follow God than to be filled with my own sight and forget God.
God (the one Supreme Being, creator and ruler of the universe) is not god (a supreme being according to my particular conception). Gott, Goth, Guth … God lives in the forest and within me and beyond us both.
Jesus is the Way, he says. I don’t make the path or seek some destination, but I just follow. Walk with Jesus, walk in Jesus, walk and walk and walk.
Like reading this devotion, one word at a time. Taking one step at a time. Living one day at a time.
Love the Lord your God. Love your neighbor as yourself. Love for just one moment at a time and no matter what happens, keep loving. Never stop.
Lord, I checkmate myself often when I seek understanding of the good. The good is there at the heart of the universe to be grasped, because you put it there. But what my heart knows, my mind seeks to understand. Not always can this be. My mind does not lead well; often its way turns out wicked. Lord, vanish not. Let me see you and follow you, and love at all times.
