Do you see

Third Week of Advent
Numbers 24:17
I see him, though not now;
I behold him, though not near:
A star shall advance from Jacob,
and a staff shall rise from Israel.
Balaam the oracle saw through the fog of the moment and glimpsed the birth of Jesus.
Said the night wind to the little lamb, “Do you see what I see?”
The simpler the seer, the clearer she sees. Nothing stands in the way of God’s revelation. The lamb, Balaam’s donkey each have much to teach their masters.
“Way up in the sky, little lamb, do you see what I see?”
How far, how far up in the sky? Can I see it too? Can I see what you see? Show me, please show me.
“A star, a star, dancing in the night, with a tail as big as a kite …”
I can’t wait to tell the shepherd boy what I’ve seen. We can run and jump in the field together, be happy to be loved together. We can feel like flying all together, all together.
“With a tail as big as a kite.”
The trees are clapping their hands, the wind is singing, and I can’t believe my eyes. The stars are dancing in the sky. All creation rings with joy. Jesus is coming, and we are all reborn.
Little lambs, shepherd boys, mighty kings, and people everywhere, we praise your name. On our knees we glorify you. You are making yourself into man. You are God, you are good, and you are making yourself into man. And we sing and shout with joy.
