1 John 2:24-27
Let what you heard from the beginning remain in you … the anointing that you received from him remains in you … it teaches you about everything, it is true and not false.
Growing in my mother’s womb, waiting to be born, I heard her heart beat. Sixty plus years later, I remember.
Listening carefully in the silence, I hear my own heart. It reminds me of God’s touch, his anointing, the truth of God more deeply in me than word or idea, song or emotion, action or will. God loves me now (my heartbeat says), and … now, and … now. I am his child … his child … his child.
John knows this heartbeat is true. Ideas are often false, emotions can be shallow, my will might serve only my own ego. Nothing about me is quite trustworthy, except the heartbeat of God’s love.
Perhaps I will only know this as the comforts of life fall away. Finally face to face with my own death, my own heartbeat ending, I see only what’s left, what’s true, what was there from the beginning and has always remained in me.
John wants us to participate in this life with God now, not just later. Second after second, day after day, we are the body of Christ. His heart beats in us. God’s eternal generosity – call him Jesus – springs up in me, so I can give. It springs up in you, and you can give, so I can receive.
We are children together, listening to our mother’s heartbeat. Waiting to be born. And God says, it’s time … it’s time … it’s time.
We can sing a new song, Lord, because you have made your salvation known. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. So we break into song, sing praise. Your goodness endures forever.
