Luke 1:31-35
Gabriel told Mary, “You will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus.”
But that’s not all, Mary. This is no ordinary son. “He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
Jesus is just now being born, but there is something clearly “forever” about him from the very start. And he is a king, not in the eyes of the world but in God’s eyes. I might see what I want to see, but God’s eyes sees things as they are.
So I watch for signs of how God sees Jesus, this last week of days before he is born. I might be in a hurry, but he is not. I might be uncertain about who Jesus is, but God is not. I want to celebrate his birth because of how he saves us from evil; God simply loves his son. What I need too often robs me of worship and adoration; God doesn’t need anything from Jesus.
Perhaps Gabriel already knew Jesus as God. But becoming human was new for all of Them. Very creative idea, this “incarnation.” “The child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.” Gabriel wants to explain whatever Mary can understand. But she is human too, and can’t know how it is for God.
So amazing that God wants to know how it is to be human.
Only a few days till Jesus is born. He is growing in Mary’s womb, and the incredible adventure of life as a human being has begun for God. What we can understand, God wants to show us. Jesus is His way to do that. Thank you, Father. Jesus is coming.
