Renovaré Spiritual Formation Bible (with the Deuterocanonical books)

The Renovaré Spiritual Formation Bible (with the Deuterocanonical Books), 2005

2,448 pages

I have lots of Bibles, even one with the Deuterocanonical Books (called the Apocrypha by most Protestants and just part of the Bible by most Catholics).  This is a huge thing, heavy.  But the NRSV text is of a happily large print, and the pages aren’t flimsy.  Plus there is lots of commentary.

Commentators include Richard Foster (of course: he is the founder of Renovaré), Dallas Willard, Walter Brueggemann, and Eugene Peterson.

Included at the end of the Bible is a “Spiritual Disciplines Index” (reprinted below).  Many of the listed verses are associated with various spiritual formation exercises spread throughout this Bible.  Disciplines include celebration, confession, fasting, meditation, prayer, silence, worship and many others.  But it also includes what Renovaré calls the “central focus of Christian spiritual formation:” the with-God life.  There are more verses in that category than any other.

Renovaré shapes its work around six “traditions”: the prayer-filled life, the virtuous life, the Spirit-empowered life, the compassionate life, the Word-centered life, and the Sacramental life.

A Bible study, “Studies in the With-God Life: Exploring the Renovaré Spiritual Formation Bible,” explores each of these traditions using the book of Luke.  It’s available online as a 62 page PDF file:  http://www.renovare.us/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket=gPXkOKHiEvw%3D&tabid=2403

I won’t be carrying this 3.2 pound Bible to the hospital or the park every day.  But I’ll be using it.  And just reading it.  A lot.

Here is a sample of the notes, from page 107, Exodus 6:9:

6:9  they would not listen to Moses, because of their broken spirit.  An exhaustion comes upon people when they have had all they can take.  For weeks or months or years they may have endured and hung on to every promise that came their way.  But nothing changed, and finally they reached a point where they could no longer hope.  It is at such junctures, when people can absolutely do no more, that a divine breakthrough often occurs.  When we are most helpless, we are in a position to receive the most help.  God does not chastise us when we become heartsick.  He acts in ways we were too strong and self-reliant to experience before.

SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINES INDEX

from the Renovaré Spiritual Formation Bible

This selective, topical index is designed to help readers get a picture of the “with-God” life presented in the Bible and the role or the Spiritual Disciplines In fostering that kind of life toward its fullness. The passages listed either contain a specific reference to a topic serving as a discipline (e.g., the word “meditation”) or are about that topic without using the specific term. Because this index is selective, It does not list every passage in the Bible on each topic, and the entries are restricted to the topic’s role as a Spiritual Discipline. Some of the entries are negative examples of the practice of a particular discipline.

The list of disciplines chosen for this index also does not include every practice or situation that could actually serve as a discipline in the process of spiritual formation. The disciplines under consideration here include celebration, chastity, confession, fasting, fellowship, guidance, meditation, prayer, sacrifice, secrecy, service, silence, simplicity/frugality, solitude, study, submission, and worship. Since the central focus of Christian spiritual formation is the with-God life, that topic begins the index. It is followed by sections containing scriptural references for the various disciplines, in alphabetical order.

Those references for which there are spiritual formation exercises in the Bible are designated by an asterisk.

No doubt some passages may have been omitted that might be very useful for understanding spiritual formation. What is given here is intended to provide only a substantial introduction to the presence and importance of Spiritual Disciplines in the Bible. For further study on disciplines and how they are to be practiced, please see Richard Foster, Celebration of Discipline, and Dallas Willard, The Spirit of the Disciplines.

In the Spiritual Disciplines Index, you will see some references to passages in the Deuterocanonical Books. These references will be in italics to differentiate their status from the New and the Old Testaments.
